All over the country Moveon.org had councils running rallies today (January 19, 2012) to show President Obama how seriously we take the Banking/Mortgage Crisis!

We ended up with 43 wonderfully dedicated supporters at the Rally in Bucks County.  It was cold, but exciting!

Local Residents Hold Protest at Bank of America; Mark Anniversary of Citizens United Decision and Demand President Obama Stand Up to the Big Banks and Order a Federal Investigation

On Thursday, January 19, over 40 supporters of Penn Action and MoveOn.org rallied at the Bank of America in Newtown, PA to mark the one year anniversary of the Citizens United decision and demand that President Obama hold the big banks accountable for the foreclosure crisis by ordering a federal investigation opposing a sweetheart deal that would give them immunity from investigation.

Dozens of Bucks County residents held signs reminding passers by that “Corporations are Not People,” asking for the end of “Corporate Welfare” and demanding an investigation of the financial sector’s role in the country’s foreclosure crisis.  “Corporations are not people.  Corporations have used their status as people to use the amendments from the Bill of Rights to pursue their own selfish interests and this has got to stop,” said Bob Mason of Levittown.  The event was part of a national day of action called “Yes He Can” taking place across the country at Obama for America (OFA) campaign offices in all 50 states and at local offices of some of the biggest banks. Participants called on President Obama to stand strong with the 99% and make sure the big banks are held accountable.

Sally Witt, coordinator of the Bucks County Move On council shared her personal story of foreclosure.  ”Foreclosure, like losing your job, has an emotional impact as well as an economic one.  It’s not easy to get over.”

“Millions of American jobs and homes have been lost, but the president has yet to hold the banks accountable for the fraudulent foreclosure practices that nearly torpedoed the economy,” said Robin Stelly, organizer with Penn Action. “President Obama has the power to order a federal investigation and start the year with a real win for the 99% movement. It’s far past time to hold the big banks responsible for the havoc they wreaked on homeowners and the economy.  The one year anniversary of Citizens United decision, which allows corporations like Bank of America to pour unlimited resources into federal elections, is the perfect time to raise these issues again.”

The rally comes after the State Attorneys General have temporarily blocked a sweetheart deal that would have given broad immunity to the banks for their role in the housing crisis.  The president now has the power to decide whether or not to move forward with a full federal investigation that would finally hold the banks accountable.

Two Peace Events this month with CFPA- Bucks County Coalition for Peace Action

 

12/21 Vigil & 12/29 Celebration

All US Troops Home from Iraq!

The Coalition for Peace Action (CFPA) is planning two events to celebrate the last US troops coming home (finally!) from Iraq.From 4:00-5:00 PM this Wednesday, December 21, CFPA’s Buxmont chapters are having a Vigil at Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick’s Office in Langhorne, PA, which will also witness for bringing US troops home from Afghanistan.

From 5:30-7:30 PM on Thursday, December 29, the Princeton regional office will host a Celebration of bringing the last US troops home from Iraq at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton.

If you haven’t already done so, please click on the link abovefor all details, then go to the bottom and use the Registerbutton to reserve for you and any guests. The event is free and open to the public,but we do ask supporters to register, so we know how many to expect.

Robin wrote a tremendous summary of the event yesterday, along with an invitation to our next two activities, so I am copying it here..

 

Thank you for your support in our pro-jobs letter campaign.  We were able to reach our goal

of 1000 letters ahead of our target date because of your enthusiasm and dedication to getting

America back on track.  

Yesterday between 25 and 30 constituents of Congressman Fitzpatrick met at his

office to continue to remind him that job creation is the issue that matters most in Bucks

County and that the American Jobs Act would mean jobs in Pennsylvania during this

unemployment crisis.  Also, that families all over the district are still left waiting to find out if 

they will be stranded without Unemployment Insurance Benefits as the extension deadline of

December 31 rapidly approaches.  The deadline to extend the Payroll Tax holiday, an

idea traditionally supported by Republicans, is also December 31 and yet there is no word 

on whether that will be allowed to continue to put money in working families’ pockets and

into the struggling economy.  

We gathered yesterday to deliver our 1000th pro-jobs letter and to demand long overdue 

leadership from the Congressman on job creation, extending Unemployment Insurance benefits 

and the Payroll Tax Holiday.

Once in the office, nobody from the staff would emerge from the back rooms to listen

to us.  We were left to state our case to the receptionist, who worked on an unrelated

matter while people tried to talk to her about the issues of putting Bucks County back

to work, families keeping their homes and being able to plan for the holiday season and 

staving off another recession.  We asked again to see someone – anyone – from the staff

who would stop typing long enough to listen to us but were told that nobody would

be called to see us.  We waited in the office until closing time and then waited in the

hall near the elevators hoping that a staff member would have to listen to us on their

way out of the building.  We were able to buttonhole District Director, Rob Mitchell, for

a few minutes in the elevator.  He seemed confused about our concern that the Congressman

is only interested in hearing from supporters and doesn’t seem willing to consider the opinions of

people who don’t support his obsession with the deficit in the face of a jobs crisis, which

could be improved by implementing the American Jobs Act.  It seems to escape the 

Congressman that if America were working again, the deficit would automatically reduce,

thanks to the taxes those working Americans would pay. 

We’ll keep you posted on the next campaign after the holidays.  In the meantime, don’t forget

Joan and Bob have generously offered to host a potluck holiday party at their home in

The strong and faithful were on hand in the cold this afternoon to Speak Out for JOBS – NOT WAR.

The Bucks County Courier Times was wrong in this article.  9 people during working hours in the cold is a strong statement when they KNOW what they are talking about and represent thousands of others in the county!  The reporter did not stay to hear us or to go to the congressman’s office upstairs.  We had a strong and effective meeting with members of the Congressman’s staff.

Protect the Right to Vote!

Subject: PROTECT THE RIGHT TO VOTE WITHOUT PHOTO ID

The right to vote is fundamental. Without it, the true voice of the people cannot make their voices heard. The Republican-backed House Bill 108-88 that would require voters to show photo identification at the polls will SOON be voted on by the Senate. Republicans claim fraud as the reason for this bill. Their real aim is to make it difficult or impossible for elderly, black, Hispanic, youth, and our soldiers overseas, many of whom are Democrats and are less likely to have photo ID, to vote.

So I created a petition to The Pennsylvania State Senate, which says:

“”We need to focus on creating jobs and getting the economy back on track, not disenfranchising voters and spending up to $11 million of taxpayer money to do it. We saw the vote get stolen from us in 2000; it can happen again.”"

Indefinite Detention Without Being Charged

“Yesterday, a Senate deal was announced that leaves the door wide open to American citizens and others being indefinitely detained without charge or trial, even on American soil.

The deal was brokered behind closed doors, with no hearing and no public debate, and is an effort by the Senate Armed Services Committee to jam the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the massive defense spending bill, through Congress.

Let me be clear. Indefinite detention is wrong under any circumstances. And for the Senate to leave open the possibility that our own citizens and other civilians picked up at home or far from any battlefield could be thrown into prison without being charged and tried is unconscionable.

This unprecedented measure has been challenged by the White House, the Department of Defense, and by the Chairmen of the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary Committees, but certain senators are intent on making it the law almost immediately.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this legislation — senators keep bringing it up. And time and time again, you and other ACLU supporters have helped us defeat it. We now need you to act once more to tell Congress “NO.”

Our National Day of Action event was GREAT – We are the 99%!! Nov 16, 2011

What a terrific and exciting event today!  We had between 40-50 people coming at different times and just pitching in with signs and chants.  The feedback from the cars was wonderful – lots of honking and thumbs up!

We have now delivered over 600 letters to Congressman Fitpatrick, and hope to hit 1,000 before the end of the year!
